Mistakes are Great!
By MaryAine Curtis, Transformation Coach & Spiritual Psychology Coach
Sewing, fashion, photography, cooking and art are some of the traits I received from my mother, although I’m also like my grandmothers who were strong and determined women.
The women that came before me left a legacy of hard work, loyalty, tenacity, love and strong spiritual beliefs. There are many of us with that legacy and we use it wisely. The flip side of this legacy is sticking it out through thick and thin, which sometimes translates into staying in unacceptable conditions for too long.
How do you know? The gambler song states that you have to "know when to hold ‘em, and know when to fold ‘em."
Women have a strong inner core that carries you through many challenges, like giving birth and raising children.
That’s our training ground for making mistakes, learning to deal with them, and making improvements. If you tend to beat yourselves up for every time you make a mistake, you’d never get out of bed. It’s okay to make mistakes, make the corrections, learn from them and adapt new skills in the process.
When sewing a garment, it’s common to backtrack and “lock in” the stitch at the end of the seam. Mistakes can be viewed the same way. Sometimes a mistake is really an opportunity to reinforce the new skill while breaking the cycle of the old way. The key is to notice what you did just prior to making the mistake. What were you thinking about that took your mind off the project or situation and caused you to make the mistake?
Inherited traits are powerful and are used consciously and unconsciously with positive and negative results that are the cause and the effect of a situation. Learn to notice and backtrack in your mind the pattern that creates the results that you’re getting. You’ll have to catch where something went better or where it began to go awry. Then you learn to use the power of your mistakes and the inherited traits of your lineage to get more of what you want in this life.
Take a moment to write down the traits that you inherited from your mother and grandmothers. You may surprise yourself as you discover that you’re strong women as well.
My example is this: My mother wanted to be a nurse, my father was a Registered Nurse, Navy Corpsman and traveler. Together they had nine children. Mom thought we were all miracles and passed on her creative abilities. I became a Holistic Therapist, photographer/writer and activist. It’s a combination of my parent’s traits.
2012 is all about finding what brings you inner joy and creativity. It’s about using your gifts to expand who you are and to be true to your inner happiness and purpose for being here. It may be radically different from what your mama did and work perfectly for you and your life. If something is worth doing then it’s worth doing it well, and mistakes are the way to perfection.
So go make some creative mistakes today!
